Our Team is a Family

Kevin Bingham is a Professional Architect and is the Managing Director of the award winning FGG Architects.

He has nearly 4 decades of experience in practice in South Africa and the UK.

  • He began at FGG as a student in 1980, and after completing his studies and working in London for a period, returned to FGG in 1993 for a three year stint working on Durban landmark projects including the Hilton Hotel, the Edge of the Sea, and The Nkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital. Kevin was lured into academia in 1997 until the end of 2007, before returning into the FGG leadership.

He is a former President of the South African Institute of Architects (SAIA), and a former President of SAIA’s KwaZulu-Natal Region. He is a former Councillor on the International Union of Architects (UIA) representing Region 5 (Africa) and continues to serve on its Professional Practice Commission and Public Health Group Work Programme. He has also served on the United Nations Habitat Professional Forum and is published in their documentation.

In practice Kevin has designed and implemented a wide range of building types of varying scales and complexities, having added specialist expertise in Acoustics and Medical architecture, with research in the relationship between infectious diseases and architecture, including the design of laboratory and public facilities, the latter incorporating studies at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Boston, USA.

Kevin currently serves on the South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP), where he chairs the Education, and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Committees. He also represents SACAP on the international Canberra Accord, where in 2023 he was appointed the Adviser to the Accord. He is the Co-Founder of SAIA's Open Architecture, which facilitates the continuing of architecture education through the ‘blended learning’ pedagogy, for disadvantaged students beyond their initial undergraduate degrees or diplomas.

Included in his 4 decades of architectural experience is a decade in full-time academia, with semester visiting-lecturer posts at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane Australia (Architectural and Interior Design), and at Liverpool University, UK (Design and Technology). His other areas of research lie in Architecture Education and the recognition of experiential learning, and in the redefining of the competencies for architectural practice.

Kevin has served as Honorary Advisor to the University of Pretoria and the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Programmes in Architecture, and on numerous Boards and Trusts.

  • Beyond Architecture and Education, Kevin’s other leadership roles are in the fields of:

Our team members have a variety of skills outside of architecture. We have a bowling champion on our team, a few runners, cyclists and fishermen. A body boarder, an artist, a sailor, a drummer, an online-shopper, part-time students and full-time parents.  We believe that our diverse interests make us better relate to our clients and projects.
